Death of Dr. A. C. Tarjan - January 25, 2009

With deep sadness we would like to inform you that Dr. A. C. (Charlie) Tarjan, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Entomology and Nematology of the University of Florida in Gainesville passed away on January 25, 2009. Charlie remained relatively healthy until shortly before his passing at the age of 89. For those who were fortunate to know Charlie, they surely appreciated his pleasant personality, total commitment to his profession, unmatched contributions to nematode taxonomy, marine nematodes, nematode diseases of citrus, and many other aspects of Nematology. The scientific community should be extremely grateful to this founding father of the Science of Nematology. Many Nematologists around the world have been exposed to his teaching and training. Charlie's teaching ability, inquisitive mind, international recognition and scientific expertise will be long remembered by the Nematology Community. He was a charter member of ONTA and played an important role in launching Nematropica in 1971. He enjoyed working in Latin America where he spent sabbatical leaves working with tropical nematode pathogens. Charlie was the first president of ONTA in 1968 and became Honorary Member in 1989. Charlie is survived by his wife Mary, son Alan, daughter Susan and grand children to whom go our condolences.
