April 2025 ENT Alum Spotlight: Moriah Garrison
Hi, I’m Moriah, and my fascination with insects started early, inspired by my dad’s work as a fisheries biologist working with aquatic insects. That curiosity eventually led me to UC Davis, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Entomology. One of the most impactful experiences during my time there was ENT 109, or “Bug Boot Camp.” Spending time at Sagehen Creek Field Station with passionate instructors and fellow bug enthusiasts gave me hands-on experience in field techniques and insect biology. Outside the classroom, I took part in unique opportunities like helping the Entomology Club manage a powder post beetle infestation on Alcatraz Island and collecting insects for forensic investigations at the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

After graduating, I explored a wide range of roles in the field. I conducted biological monitoring with Pollinator Partnership, worked in the Nansen Lab at UC Davis focusing on agricultural entomology, and gained industry experience testing insect repellents on mosquitoes, ticks, and lice in a biological research lab. I have also had the chance to operate the butterfly house at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, where I cared for butterflies and assisted with other park animals. During this time, I completed a Master’s degree in entomology from the University of Florida, along with a graduate certificate in Medical Entomology. Now, I’m looking forward to be working as the Entomologist at the Sutter-Yuba Mosquito and Vector Control District.
